The self image you have today , was created by someone else, your parents,the environment you grew up in and other people around you,friends,teachers,relatives etc. This self image formation began before your birth. As youngsters we are like a sponges absorbing everything we hear and experience, as if it was the gospel truth, no matter if it was or not true. Our conscious mind of reasoning and logic and truth had not been developed yet so we take on what we see, hear and are exposed to as if it was written for us to wear and carry our entire life. As its been said we will grow physcially but we may be stuck somewhere back in our younger years emotionally. This is what your self-image is made of.
You might be thinking no not me I had a wonderful childhood and I can not remember any tramatic occurance that might have left some sort of scarred image of my self. This may very well be true and if it is great. Do you like the results your life has produced in the past? Has there ever been a habit of some sort that you wanted to change but for some reason couldnt get it done? The results in your life that you are currently experiencing are a direct result of how you see yourself.
James Allen writes it best in a poem with a line that says." Your environment is but a looking glass."

My father was a successfull image in the the city where we lived and at a very young age I started gaining weight, he was disappointed and embarrased and would bribe me to lose weight. Make comments of his disaprooval to me about it.
My mother a loving woman who struggled with a performance minded husband who drank at night so she would shop and eat. She did everything to please him even shined his shoes I use to think WOW! LOL
So these feelings were programed into me. Not worthy, shameful, guilt, unlovable, I just wanted to run and hide, who would want me?etc.
Important to note here: Experiences connect theirselves to feelings and emotions. To prove this think of a past experience good or bad you will start to feel that same feeling and emotion that you felt at that time it happened even though its in the past. Like magic through our thoughts we can bring them to life. So if we are living by an old program about ourselves when a situation presents itself to us now we out of habit recall up the old program and we will revert to a behavior as we did when we felt it before. Do you see the pattern here? Its a cycle that will keep circling until we learn new awareness and desire to be different to get different results.
Example: I struggled with relationships until I learned this information. Why? Long ago I took on the self image I was unworthy of being respected, loved, accepted etc. and took on the attitude of I don't care and is this as good as life is going to get. .
A current situation would happen and the old program of familiar voices would bring up those past feelings and emotions because they were attached to those past experiences they would say remember me, and remember when you felt that before and I am here to relieve your stress and hurt so lets go eat ( note this can be any behavior) you say I shouldn't but I feel so bad I just need something to help me so you give in.. Willpower will not work...
So how do we change for the good we desire...
We have a mind that has a imagnation that can create. We have thoughts that can make anything feel real. We can make ourselves believe whatever we choose. So we have to choose to make a NEW you! Trying to change the existing mold will make you nuts and think something is wrong with you. Stop beatng yourself up!
Now that you have new information ... Re create your self image by using the mind to create the good you desire for yourself for your body and your entire life.
