Some call it self talk, others refer to it as auto suggestion. The key is that you understand the meaning behind what your doing. Napoleon Hill in his book Think and Grow Rich explains it this way.... that affirmation is the most direct route of communication between the conscious mind where thought takes place and the subconscious mind which serves as the seat of habitual behavior.
Want to change your results in life? Decide what you want and write a statement that you are already in possession of it. Write it several times a day speak it out with feeling and gratitude. Expect to see the desire of what you want to come to pass. Something is already coming to pass in your life, it might as well be something that you really want.
Below I have given you an affirmation that I am starting March 1st for 30 days. I am going to write it down 5 times a day and speak it out throughout the day. Most likely before I eat, shop or feel like I would like to eat. Notice I said "feel like", isn't that the issue, we do things by feelings not by our conscious logical mind what is really best for us.
Anything we impress upon our mind with feeling and gratitude will eventual take form in our lives. I have done affirmations in the pass but with the wrong motivate and with out feeling and gratitude attached to them. When you write and speak the words out loud imagine what it feels like to have it in your possession already. Be the captain of your ship.
